Every person entering Malaysia must possess a valid national passport. Foreign nationals who require a visa to enter Malaysia must apply and obtain a visa in advance at the Malaysian Representative Office. Visa on arrival will be given only to foreign nationals who already have a visa to enter Singapore or Thailand. The visa will be for tourist purposes only and is valid for duration of 14 days. Extension of visa is not allowed. Must have a confirmed return ticket.
Culture and Customs
When meeting Malaysian men, there stern handshake is acceptable. For Malaysian women, shake their hands only if they offer, otherwise, a nod and a smile will do. The Malaysian handshake is generally soft and limp. In everyday social conduct, there are several do's and don'ts that should be observed. Don't point with the finger. To point at anything, use a thumb resting on a clenched fist. Also, don't beckon by wriggling the index finger; instead, wave with the hand with the palm facing down. Accept or give anything with the right hand. Always remove your shoes when entering homes and places of worship. Always be decently dressed when entering a place of worship, and avoid passing in front of anyone offering prayer. The head is considered a sacred part of the body and should not be touched. Touching strangers of the opposite sex is frowned upon, so do not touch the arms of waitresses or salesmen to catch their attention. As Malays are Muslims, do not offer alcohol or any food containing pork to them. Many Indians are Hindus and do not eat beef, as the cow is a sacred animal in Hinduism. Indian Airlines flies to KL daily from Chennai. Air India with limited seats flies onwards to Singapore, twice from New Delhi and Mumbai, and once from Bangalore and Hyderabad.
